Materials include various committee meeting minutes and agendas, nursing program policy and accreditation documents, photographs, 35mm slides, 16mm film reels, VHS cassettes, 3.5" floppy diskettes, newspaper clippings and newspaper article compilation publications, newsletters and magazines, correspondence, Silver Jubilee donation receipts and alumni information, and self-study and program feasibility reports.

Biographical or Historical Information

The Division of Nursing was created in 1975 on the campus of Texas Eastern University as a grantor of baccalaureate degrees to Registered Nurses looking to complete the Bachelor's of Science in Nursing degree. In October 1979 the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program was created after TEU became The University of Texas at Tyler, with the first classes offered in the fall of 1982. In April 1988 the Master of Science in Nursing degree was approved, accreditation was granted 1992. Since then, Nursing Education, Nursing Administration, Nurse Practitioner, and a dual MSN and Master of Business Administration track have been added. The Palestine Distance Education Initiative was approved in fall 1995, and in 1997the Division of Nursing received status as a School of Nursing. On October 25, 2007 the doctoral nursing program received final approval with the inaugural class graduating in Spring 2011.

Abstract

This collection contains materials created and collected by The University of Texas at Tyler Nursing Department faculty, staff, and students. Materials found in the collection document the creation and evaluation of the Bachelor's of Science in Nursing, Master's of Science in Nursing and Mobility In Nursing Education programs. Files of faculty members Marian Rowe, Linda Klotz, and Kathy Deardorff are included. Student assignments and course evaluations are also found, along with commencement, convocation, and special events programs. A portion of the collection documents the organization and execution of the Nursing Department's 25-year Silver Jubilee Celebration ,which includes a VHS cassette of the "Reflections on our Past" program. Photographs of department events, students, and the David G. and Jacqueline M. Braithwaite Building construction are present, along with an assortment of newsletters, magazines, and newspaper clippings regarding the UT Tyler nursing department, general nursing, and nursing in East Texas.

On 7/26/03 two additional boxes of materials, including historical files kept by former Nursing faculty Marian Rowe, were received from Lasi McArthur.

Separated Materials

69 issues of Intercom from 1979 to 1999, The Forum volume 14 numbers 1 to 3, volume 15 number 1, and volume 7 number 3, the May 1995 special edition of The Eye of the Eagle, and the Fall and Spring 2005 issues of UT Tyler Magazine were weeded. These publications are available in the Marketing and Communications Records collection (UASC.UA.003). The Summer 2006 issue of The University of Texas at Tyler College of Nursing Magazine was weeded. This publication can be found in the University Advancement Records collection (UASC.UA.015). A 1991-92 UT Tyler Student Handbook was weeded. A copy of this handbook is found in the Registrar Records collection (UASC.UA.013).

Processing Information

Loose papers were organized by subject. Contents of existing labelled file folders were transferred intact and retain their original titles and order. Newspaper clippings were placed in protective sleeves and ordered chronologically.
