The Marketing and Communications department at the University of Texas at Tyler manages the composition, branding, and distribution of university publications across all mediums. The department also comprises all aspects of web content management, advertising, promotion, graphic design, photography, and public affairs related to the business of the University. The department originated in 1974 as the Public Information Office under James S. Powell. In 1976, Archie Whitfield replaced James Powell as Director of Public Information. Mark R. Heckmann was named Director in 1986. Laura L. Hughes replaced Mark Heckmann in 1994, when Mr. Heckmann assumed the role of Executive Assistant to the President for Public Affairs. In 2000, Beverly Shelton became the Director of the department, newly renamed the Office of News and Information. In 2001, Beverly Shelton changed her name to Beverly Golden. The Office of News and Information operated under the division of Student Affairs and External Relations, and later the division of Enrollment Management and Marketing. The Office of News and Information was renamed the Office of Marketing and Communications in 2010. As of 2012, the Office of Marketing and Communications operates under the auspices of Enrollment Management, Marketing and Customer Relations. Note written by Samantha Winn.
