Scope and Contents
Sub-Series A is arranged alphabetically (according to Sarah McClendon’s original order). A small number of items (from acquisitions after 1992) were folded into this series during processing. Subjects include individuals, causes, government agencies, locations, organizations, and legislation. Notable attention is given to women’s rights groups, journalism organizations, veterans organizations and interests (especially women veterans), agriculture and dairy, rights of the elderly, Presidents and their staff, Texans in Washington, D.C., foreign policy (especially related to Russia and Iran), health and wellness, childcare, the military industrial complex (defense), disability, education, ethics violations, and Tyler, Texas. Significant individuals include but are not limited to Henry Kissinger, Roger Ailes, Dick Armey, Lee Atwater, Bobby Baker, Jim Baker, Lloyd Bentsen, Barbara Bush, Robert Byrd, Anna Chennault, Elizabeth Chittick, John Connally, Walter Cronkite, Admiral William Crowe, Mario Cuomo, Phil Gramm, Ralph Hall, Barbara Honegger, J. Edgar Hoover, Admiral Grace Hopper, Jesse Jackson, Barbara Jordan, Melvin Laird, Marvin Leath, Frank Mayborn, George Mitchell, Bill Moyers, Tip O’Neill, Ann Powers, Dan Quayle, Sam Rayburn, Ann Richards, Adm. Hyman Rickover, Lynda Johnson Robb, Larry Speakes, Craig Spence, Jim Wright, and Ralph Yarborough. Materials comprise notes, article drafts, newspaper clippings, newsletters, photographs, correspondence, and magazine articles. The bulk of this sub-series was compiled in the 1980s. Sub-Series B, “Veterans and Veterans Affairs”, contains similar material to sub-series A. Sub-Series B was compiled separately by Sarah McClendon, and the folder level and item level arrangement reflects her original order. Comprising 18 folders, this sub-series contains research, speeches, article drafts, copies of articles by Sarah McClendon (newspaper and magazine), newspaper clippings, and correspondence with veterans.
